FAQs

What is ascorbic acid?
Ascorbic acid, also known as pure vitamin C, is a gold standard, dermatologist-approved ingredient in skincare. It delivers unparallelled brightening action on dullness, skin ageing, UV and free radical damage and pigmentation.
What does ‘Fresh Batch’ mean?
Though potent, ascorbic acid is an unstable ingredient that traditional skincare struggles to handle well. Our product is called Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid because we’re able to produce it in small, precision batches, guaranteeing ingredient strength for the best possible results. To prevent degradation, you’ll also receive your product in airtight, opaque packaging and it’s designed to be used in one month.
How do you know if ascorbic acid has degraded or expired?
Due to its instability, ascorbic acid can degrade relatively quickly and the shelf life is shorter than some other skincare products. This is why we’ve packaged our product in airtight, opaque bottles and it’s only designed to be used for one month. When your product has degraded, you’ll usually notice the colour change to a distinct yellow, brown or orange colour. Don’t worry though, this oxidisation is a natural chemical reaction that happens over time. It’s harmless, but it does mean that the product has lost its effectiveness so you should stop using it.
Can I use Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid with my personalised formula?
Yes, you can use an ascorbic acid serum alongside other skincare products including your personalised formula. Our dermatology experts advise that you use them at different times of the day. Use your Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid in the morning before sunscreen, and your personalised formula at night.
Which skincare products should I avoid?
While using Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid our experts recommend that you avoid using physical exfoliants or liquid exfoliants like AHAs, BHAs or PHAs. If you notice that your skin barrier becomes irritated or inflamed after applying ascorbic acid, take a break for a few days until the inflammation calms down before resuming use. If this becomes painful or unbearable, reach out to our experts or your doctor for advice.
Are there any side effects?
Some people with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation or redness when using ascorbic acid. If you think this includes you, do a patch test before applying the serum to your entire face. Also, always use sunscreen (SPF30+) during the day to give your skin added protection.
How should I store my product?
To maintain the stability and potency of ascorbic acid, store your product in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
Can I use an ascorbic acid serum during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Ascorbic acid is safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you’re unsure and you’re a Dermatica customer, you can reach out to your dermatology expert to answer any of your questions.
What is the recommended concentration of ascorbic acid in a skincare product?
The most effective concentrations of ascorbic acid in skincare serums typically range from 10% to 20%. Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid has a 15% concentration to provide a potent amount of ascorbic acid, while accommodating as many skin types as possible.
Why is Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid combined with vitamin E and ferulic acid?
Vitamin C, E and ferulic acid provide a triple-layer defence against damaging environmental stressors like UV rays and air pollution, which are key contributors to premature ageing.
